What is a redetermination?

Every year, Medicaid members are required to submit proof of income to determine whether or not they are still eligible to receive Medicaid coverage. This is also known as a renewal.

What’s changing?

During the Public Health Emergency (PHE) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this renewal process was paused. Everyone with Medicaid was able to keep their benefits without going through the redetermination process. The PHE has now ended, and states are required to start redeterminations again. In Illinois, this began in April, 2023.

How do I redetermine?

When it is time for you to renew, you will receive a letter in the mail from the Illinois Department of Health and Family Services (IHFS). If they need more information from you to determine your eligibility, you will need to return the requested forms and documents by the due date listed.

If the forms are not returned, your benefits may be terminated. To make sure you receive your letter, Illinois Medicaid needs your most current address. Click here to update your mailing address.

When will I get my letter?

Everyone has a unique redetermination date based on the month that your Medicaid coverage began. You will get a letter in the month that you are due. To find out your due date, you can create a Manage My Case account by visiting www.abe.liinois.gov and clicking the button that says, ‘Manage My Case’.
